​~Rooted in the Garden~

     One of my earliest childhood memories is pulling salads, barefooted from the garden my dad always grew. In our suburban Pennsylvania home, nature was simply part of life. Our family vacations usually included tents, coolers, bonding campfires, a canopy of stars above our heads at night with endless memories to take home. We were fortunate enough to have enough room to explore in the surrounding area we grew up in. We had woods, a neighboring farm, a creek, bikes, church on Sundays, drank from the hose, tire swings, tree forts, horses & countless days fishing in Tyler Park. With the garden at the heart of it all, those seeds my father sowed became lessons to me as well as some of the most delicious, beautiful creations I’ve ever known — reminders that every good thing is a gift from our Heavenly Father.

 

~From Cosmetology to Organic~

     After graduating as a cosmetologist in my early twenties, In 1997, I tore out the lawn of my townhouse and planted an organic garden. While working in various salons for 15 years, and knowing skin absorbs EVERYTHING, I was shocked by how many harmful chemicals were in everyday products. I kept hoping there would be a salon that was plant-based, organic, and affordable — so in 2011 I opened Sycamore Salon – The Organic Option, Purposefully named with 34 other salons in town. 

 

~The Farm and the Salon~

     In 2017, my husband Chris and I renovated our 1798 farmhouse mostly with our 4 hands and with the help of family and friends. And as timing has its purpose, the “clean” hair product companies I relied on were, one after another, discontinued leaving me and my clients desperate for hair care, I began thinking and coincidentally, they soon started asking me to create my own line. I had already been making organic, clean products for myself for years, so I began formulating a line I could truly stand behind while simultaneously earning numerous Certifications in herbalism and Herbal Product Formulation. 

 

~Growing My Ingredients~

     We practice Organic composting as well as layering various types of untreated wood chips from our trees in the garden, offering a natural soil regeneration with nutrient replenishment and a fertilization system with the help of worms and the decomposition of what has had it's time in our garden. electro-culture also plays a HUGE roll with various copper coil rods and Chris designed and handmade me a beautiful 10' copper trellis what looks like, a fairy tale center piece. I organically grow, harvest and distill my own botanical ingredients (I distill to extract my collection of essential oils) from— plants, flowers, trees, herbs, roots, stems, leaves and petals - right here on the farm. My first harvest helped provide me to build an apothecary full of 87 oil/ethanol infused tinctures — What I don’t grow, I source organically from its origin: Spikenard from Jerusalem, Vanilla from Madagascar, and so on. After buying our property, I felt a strong prompting to plant a large fenced in garden — fruit orchard, vegetables, herbs, and countless flowers. It seemed odd at the time, especially since I was on a carnivore diet, but I’m grateful I did. That garden became the foundation for my apothecary and medicinal tinctures, and after a brief health situation, it became essential to my healing.

 

~A Line Made with Purpose~

     Scent from Above is the hair, skin, and home care line of my dreams: organic, non-toxic, made the way care was made in biblical times with clean ingredients. With over 30 years of experience in hair and skin, my trust in Jesus Christ and The Holy Bible guiding every decision, each product is created with intention. I research the biblical use and meaning of each botanical and include a relevant verse with every formula. The rule is simple: If we use it ourselves and absolutely love it, it remains on the shelf.

 

~A Journey I Didn’t Plan~

     Scent from Above began as a realization, not a plan. When I sit quietly, God tells me the way and then I ask Him what’s next?. I didn’t even know why I was doing all these things at the time but I chose to trust and obey unknowingly and I’ve learned He’s been leading me along this path my entire life. And so the story goes…

 

Introducing Scent From Above to the world is my chance to help others live more cleanly, to reconnect to the earth and most of all, to honor & grow closer to God — and I’m just getting started.
